The Humane Society of the United States’ Animal Rescue Team was called in by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office to assist in the rescue of 150 cats, five dogs and four rabbits from a Reidsville, N.C. property. The animals were being housed in unsanitary conditions and appear to lack proper socialization and medical care. The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office seized all animals on the property except two cats and one dog.
“While this individual may have started out with good intentions, many of these animals were in poor condition when responders removed them from the property,” said Kim Alboum, North Carolina state director for The HSUS. “The Humane Society of the United States is proud to work with local groups to come to the aide of these animals.”
This case began when the sheriff’s office, HSUS and local groups received complaints from citizens concerned for the welfare of the animals. The groups collaborated to provide animal handling and assistance with transportation, logistics, and financial needs for the rescue of the animals.
When responders arrived on scene they found many animals that were in need of immediate medical care. The ammonia levels were so high in some areas that responders had to wear special masks. Many of the animals were underweight, infested with parasites and suffering from upper respiratory infections.
