NAACP Mourns Passing of Senator George McGovern

The NAACP mourned the loss of Senator George McGovern, who passed away on October 21. He was 90 years old.

“Senator McGovern was a champion for the poor, the oppressed and those disillusioned with the status quo,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “He never backed down from his solid progressive principles, and he spoke out against extremism for his entire career. Our hearts go out to his family and his loved ones in their time of grieving.”

“Senator McGovern truly cared for all Americans,” stated Hilary Shelton, Director of the NAACP Washington Bureau and Sr. Vice President for Advocacy and Policy. “He was a courageous advocate for civil and human rights at a time when that carried severe political risks. He will be truly missed.”
