Obama Administration Seeks to Strengthen Oil Train Spill-Response Plans

On July 13th, the Obama Administration proposed more stringent spill-response planning rules for oil trains. The announcement comes on the heels of the three year anniversary of the oil train disaster in Lac Megantic, Quebec that killed 47 people and the most recent oil train derailment near Mosier, Oregon in June.

In response, Sierra Club Director of Beyond Dirty Fuels Lena Moffitt released the following statement:

“The Sierra Club applauds the Obama Administration for taking this initial step to strengthen standards for oil train spill-response plans. It is critical that all train companies carrying any amount of crude oil demonstrate that they have the capability to respond to a disaster, and that first responders at all levels have the resources to as well.

“We hope the Obama Administration heeds the calls from Americans who know that it’s not a question of if a train will crash, but a question of when, and ban oil trains throughout the country.”
