Senate Democrats Lead Charge Against Corporate Climate Deniers

Today, Senator Harry Reid kicked off the charge led by Sheldon Whitehouse and Congressman Ted Lieu against corporate climate deniers and the groups they front that spread misinformation and lies about climate science.

In addition to the number of Democratic senators speaking out, Senator Whitehouse and Representative Ted Lieu have introduced concurrent resolutions citing fossil fuel companies “sophisticated and deceitful” campaigns to counter known climate science and protect their profits. The resolutions would oppose any and all efforts by fossil fuel companies, trade associations, and other groups that “deliberately cast doubt on science in order to protect their financial interests.”

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“The Sierra Club commends Senator Whitehouse, Representative Lieu, and the members of Congress who are taking a stand against corporate polluters and the front groups they support that have spread a web of climate denial.

“It’s not just the majority of Americans that know climate change is real — corporate polluters do as well, and it’s why they have fought for decades to spread lies and misinformation to protect their bottom line.

“Facts are facts, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan should quit playing games with our public health and our climate and schedule votes for these resolutions immediately.”
