The Happiest Ending: A Tale of Five Lambs and Their Brave Mothers.
After months of waiting to ensure the permanent custody of these amazing little lambs and their mothers, we are happy to announce the arrival of our new lamb family!
The mothers: Izzy, Zepha, and Daniella!
The first baby born was the beautiful Vera Jo to the older and very frightened mother Izzy.
Izzy and her beautiful new baby Vera Jo. She had her during the day when no one was watching. Poof — there was Vera Jo!
Izzy has yet to allow us to even pet her, and had her baby without any assistance or anyone around. She definitely wanted to be alone, and that is what we wanted for her too.
Just a few hours old! All cleaned up and beautiful, but still with tiny soft hooves — Vera Jo lounging in the sun.
Her beautiful baby Vera Jo, unlike mom, has grown to love us and everyone she meets. Not a fear in the world for this little beauty, and with any luck, she will show mom that her new human friends are A-OK.
There is no silencing this little lamb gal!
Just days after the arrival of Vera Jo, two twin girls were born. Meet sisters Cindy and Laura.

Shelter Manager Jill Tedeschi and Senior Caregiver Abbie Rogers do a quick physical exam while Zepha continues to clean her new and very beautiful lamb Cindy.
Just born — the first of the twins, Cindy!
Their mother, Zepha, is the most frightened of all the mothers, and it is heartbreaking to think of the number of lambs she must have given birth to and had taken away prior to her rescue.
While mom was busy cleaning Cindy, guess who popped out into the world. Slightly younger sister Laura is actually a much bigger lamb than her tiny older twin! Look at those legs. Here, Laura gets help drying off from caregiver Amy Gaetz and senior caregiver Abbie Rogers.
“What a good job I did with these two — clean as a whistle and safe on a heated blanket.”
But now she can live out her whole life with her babies, whom she adores.
Zepha is the greatest mom — and one tough gal, nursing those two daughters!
Finally just a week later, the boys arrived. Daniella gave birth to two handsome young rams. Thankfully, because Daniella is so incredibly friendly, these boys also adore us.
A still-very-pregnant Daniella looks in to see what caregivers are doing, a few hours after the birth of Zepha’s twins!

These little ones were the tiniest and also had a congenital health issue that is being surgically corrected at the Nemo Farm Animal Hospital at Cornell University today! By this Thursday, the boys will be back in business. All three — Mom and babies — are at Cornell so they could remain together.
New babies just two days old, hanging out with their sheeple!
Sheep and their babies have a very special language all their own, which seems to mostly be made up of the command: “Get over here!” or “Stay away from that!” And just like human kids, the older they get, the worse their hearing of those messages seems to be. (Okay — the less they listen.)
Daniella getting the boys in line — they tend to wander off when they are finding new and exciting things in the pasture.
So thanks for checking out this amazing new lamb family — we’re sorry for the delay in presenting them, but now that we have custody, we can shout it from the rooftops!
Jumping for joy — life is good at sanctuary.
Little Laura is over the moon to be able to live with her new flock and friends her own age. What a great life.
For the first time in their lives,
these three mothers will not experience sadness and grief over the loss of their babies, but joy at being able to stay with them for life. And these five babies will always know the love of a mother — the way it should always be.
Beautiful Izzy — starting to relax just a little and playing the role of babysitter for everyone’s kids.
We are so thankful to our incredible supporters, who made it possible for us to rescue and care for this special family, as well as the more than 170 other farm animals we were able to save from a horrific Cattaraugus County “farm-to-table” operation. Thanks to you, they have wonderful lives ahead of them!
