The HSUS Applauds Anne Arundel County, Md. Law Enforcement for Bringing Charges in Bear-Bear’s Death

The Humane Society of the United States thanks the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorneys’ Office, the Anne Arundel County Police Department and Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold for the seriousness with which they investigated the death of Bear-Bear, a Siberian husky who was shot at a community dog park earlier this month.

Prosecutors filed a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge and a misdemeanor firearms charge today against Keith Shepherd, of Severn, Md., who is accused of shooting Bear-Bear at Quail Run Dog Park in Severn on Aug. 2, resulting in the dog’s death.

“The Humane Society of the United States is pleased with the thorough investigation performed by Anne Arundel County law enforcement and the State’s Attorneys’ Office into Bear-Bear’s death,” said Justin L. Scally of The HSUS. “These charges demonstrate that gratuitous violence against animals will be prosecuted in Anne Arundel County.”

The Humane Society of the United States assisted state and county officials with the follow-up investigation into the case. Special thanks go out to Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Frank Weathersbee, Assistant State’s Attorney Kim DiPietro and Anne Arundel County Police Chief Col. James Teare Sr.

Editors Note:  Shepherd was an off-duty federal police officer at the time of the shooting.   When his dog and Bear-Bear started fighting, he asked the owners brother who was watching Bear-Bear to intervene.  The brother claims that the officer did not give him time to take action before pulling his gun and shooting the dog.
