The HSUS Assists in Rescue of Nearly 100 Dogs in Montana Hoarding Situation

The Humane Society of the United States is helping the Wibaux County Sheriff’s Department remove nearly 100 dogs from an overrun property in Wibaux, Mont. The HSUS was asked to assist in the rescue after neighbors raised concerns that the dogs were living in unsanitary and substandard conditions. All of the animals have been surrendered to the Wibaux County Sheriff’s Department.

“The individual caring for these dogs started out with good intentions, but has obviously become overwhelmed and lacks the resources to give these dogs the care they need and the individual attention they deserve,” said Adam Parascandola, director of Animal Cruelty Issues for The HSUS. “In rural areas such as Eastern Montana there is often limited capacity to handle large-scale animal rescues, and we’re pleased to lend our resources and expertise to assist local communities. In fact, The Humane Society of the United States was here just six weeks ago to assist in the rescue of more than 90 animals from an overcrowded shelter in Baker.”

When responders arrived on the property they found more than 90 dogs, mostly shepherd mixes, living in filthy, crowded outdoor pens. The owner of the property did not have a telephone or a vehicle, which may have made it difficult for him to properly care for the dogs. Many of the dogs are suffering from medical ailments such as parasite infestation and skin infections.

The HSUS is safely removing all of the animals and transporting them to a nearby, temporary shelter set up specifically for this rescue by The HSUS and United Animal Nations. Upon arrival, the dogs are receiving thorough veterinary checks and any necessary medical treatment. PetSmart Charities ® donated much-needed sheltering supplies for the rescued animals.

The HSUS and UAN will care for the dogs while they are housed at the emergency shelter. Once all of the animals have the proper health certificates The HSUS will transport them to partner shelters and rescue organizations to be placed for adoption.
