The Work of a Farm Sanctuary Caregiver: How We Meet Our Rescued Residents’ Health Care Needs #AnimalRescue

More than 500 farm animals, many of whom were rescued from horrific situations, now call our New York Shelter home. And every single day, each one of them is visited by Farm Sanctuary’s incredible and hardworking caregiving staff. From evaluating health and wellness to providing medications and treatments to helping a mobility-impaired goat into his special wheeled cart, a Farm Sanctuary caregiver on a health care shift is a busy “humanimal” indeed (and he or she might walk the equivalent of 10-15 miles in a single shift)!

In the video above, Shelter Manager Jill Tedeschi gives a glimpse into a typical health care shift. Below, she talks about the highs and lows that go along with addressing the health care needs of our residents.

Earlier today, National Shelter Director Susie Coston hosted a Facebook Live video at our onsite Melrose Small Animal Hospital, visiting with some of our residents who are currently receiving treatment there, discussing the health care needs of rescued farm animals, and answering viewer questions. If you missed it, you can see the full replay below. Be sure to like us on Facebook to see future live video sessions and more updates from our sanctuaries!
