What Could Be More Precious Than Air?

When it comes to sustaining life, perhaps nothing is more precious. But if anything comes close, it must surely be water. Water, you ask? Water covers two thirds of the Earth's surface! What makes it so precious?

Well, the answer depends on whether you want to drink it or swim in it. Because, if you need a drink, or you'd like to water the garden, less than 1 percent of all the water on Earth can be used for such purposes as basic health, sanitation and irrigation.

Even though the World is covered by 70 percent water, only 2.5 percent of this water is freshwater. According to a report by the , a mere .007 percent of the Earth's total freshwater resources is accessible for human use. The report also stated that world water use has grown at more than twice the rate of the population increase during the past century!

First, The Bad News

Yes! You and I, and the rest of the entire land based population of the Earth must all get by on less than 1 percent of the Earth's entire water supply! Kind of scary, isn't it?

All of a sudden you begin to think there might just be something to water conservation. Imagine how much water we humans waste each day! For example, take that marvelous invention first illustrated by Sir John Harington in 1597, patented by both Cummins and Bramah in the 1770's and later perfected by one Thomas Crapper in the late 1800's: of course I am referring to none other than the water flushing toilet!

This appliance was an instant hit, all the way back to the first one, which Sir Harington's god-mother, Queen Elizabeth, had built and installed in her own private privy at the close of the 1500's! Since then billions more have been placed in use throughout the world.

Water flushing toilets really work. The is, until just a few years ago, most toilets were so wasteful they consumed almost half the water used in every American household! That's right, 43% of all water used in the average home goes down the toilet!

The average water usage per person in the US in 1995 was 91 gallons per day. On the average a household with three persons will use 100,000 gallons of water a year. In some states the average is as high as 183 gallons per person! Imagine 43% of all that water down the toilet!

Low Flow Toilets came on the scene a few years back and many communities are involved in programs encouraging citizens to switch. The typical family can save up to 12,000 gallons of water a year by installing low flow toilets, even if you do occasionally have to double flush. But surely there must be a better way to go?
