The Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust has received a donation of a 154-acre conservation easement in Ashland, Ore. The Greenspring Wildlife Sanctuary is now a permanently protected wildlife habitat and the second Wildlife Land Trust sanctuary to be established in Oregon.
Although a previous conservation easement protected the land from any future development, the donor chose the WLT to ensure specific protection for the wildlife who call this property home. Under the conservation easement with WLT, recreational and commercial hunting and trapping will always be prohibited. The Greenspring Wildlife Sanctuary will forever be a safe haven for wildlife.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to work with the donor to protect her land for wildlife,” says Robert Koons, executive director of the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust. “Her generosity and love for all animals will live on through the lasting legacy of this permanent wildlife sanctuary.”
The Greenspring Wildlife Sanctuary is a forested property that includes a portion of Keene Creek and has a small artificial pond used by the area’s wildlife. One mile of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail traverses the property, which lies within the Cascade Siskiyou National Monument. Numerous wildlife species are known to use the property including elk, coyote, black bear, cougar and bobcat. A wide variety of birds nest here all year and even more pass through on migration. A great gray owl is also known to nest here.
Without adequate habitat, wildlife lacks the shelter, food and security necessary to survive. Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust sanctuaries serve as “Shelters without Walls®” for free-roaming animals.
