NAACP Applauds VA Board of Elections for Rejecting Partisan Challenge to Voter Registration

The NAACP applauds the Virginia State Board of Elections for denying requests to open a criminal inquiry into the previously-approved registration efforts of the Voter Participation Center (VPC). VPC and the NAACP are working together to register thousands of eligible Virginians ahead of the 2012 elections.

“The NAACP is glad to see that the Virginia State Board of Elections has rejected this latest attempt by partisan politicians to suppress voter turnout,” stated Marvin Randolph, NAACP Sr. Vice President for Campaigns. The NAACP will continue to work with the Voter Participation Center to ensure that all Virginians who are eligible to vote are registered for the upcoming elections.”

Several members of the Virginia NAACP and the National NAACP attended the Board of Elections hearing to voice their concerns about attempts to challenge VPC’s lawful voter registration efforts in the state.

“More than 15,000 applications would have been at stake if this complaint were allowed to move forward,” stated Carmen Taylor, Vice-President of the Virginia State Conference NAACP.  “We applaud the Board of Elections for acting responsibly and denying this effort to block thousands of eligible voters from the ballot box.”
