The Humane Society of the United States, on behalf of its more than 75,000 supporters in the Granite State, is pleased to announce that New Hampshire state Rep. John Reagan, R-Rockingham 01, will receive a Humane State Legislator Award for 2010. Each year, The HSUS, the nation’s largest animal protection organization, recognizes state lawmakers across the country who have initiated path-breaking animal protection legislation and demonstrably advanced reform in the policy-making arena.
Rep. Reagan received the award for his leadership and co-sponsorship of a bill to eliminate live greyhound racing, HB 630. The bill was approved at the beginning of last year and signed into law by Gov. John Lynch in July. The ban took effect in January 2011.
“It’s a thrill to honor Rep. Reagan for his leadership on the passage of the 2010 Greyhound Protection Act,” said Joanne Bourbeau, New Hampshire senior state director for The HSUS.“Racing greyhounds suffered long-term confinement, isolation, crippling injuries and even death at the hands of the racing industry. Thanks to compassionate and determined lawmakers like Rep. Reagan, we’ve been able to bring an end to this cruel chapter of New Hampshire’s history once and for all.”
“I have standards for the actions I take in my life, and our treatment of the environment, other living creatures and our personal relationships declare our standards,” said Rep. Reagan. “I personally do not wish to be known as a person who tolerates the mistreatment of animals, and I’m pleased to have worked against and voted for the end of greyhound racing in New Hampshire.”
