New Move In Campaign To Save Yellowstone’s Unique Buffalo

In light of the unrelenting persecution of the Yellowstone bison– a coalition of animal and
environmental groups will file a petition with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service (USFWS) to list Yellowstone bison as a threatened distinct
population segment.

The petition may be the last hope for the bison,
thousands of whom have been gunned down, chased, rounded up and
mercilessly slaughtered by the State of Montana and the National Park
Service since 1985. The killing has been occurring at the behest of
ranchers, who insist that free-roaming bison threaten their domestic
cattle herds with the possibility of brucellosis transmission. This myth
and the subsequent, deadly persecution continue despite the fact that
cattle are not present when bison migrate to their native winter range,
and the fact that there has never been a documented case of transmission
from wild bison to livestock.

This winter alone, more than 200 bison have
been sent to slaughter.
