Senate Republicans Refuse to Hold Hearings for Merrick Garland for 230 Days #DoYourJob

Wednesday marked day 230 since Merrick Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court arrived in the U.S. Senate. Since then, the Senate Republicans have refused to hold hearings for Garland.

This unprecedented obstruction may soon rise to a whole new level. Senate Republicans have begun to indicate that if Hillary Clinton wins they will stand united against any judicial nominee she nominates. Now North Carolina Senator Richard Burr, who will be facing voters next Tuesday for re-election, boldly assured voters yesterday that he has no intention of doing his job if he returns to the Senate. He said that “if Hillary becomes president, I’m going to do everything I can do to make sure that four years from now, we’re still going to have an opening on the Supreme Court.”

HRC has endorsed Deborah Ross, Burr’s opponent, for his Senate seat.

The longest Supreme Court vacancy since 1900 was 391 days.   Burr’s commitment to supporting a four year judicial emergency and to create the longest Supreme Court vacancy in U.S. history is an unconscionable jab to the very core of our republic.  This negligent politicizing of our nation’s justice system is nothing to boast about.  And it sure isn’t an election platform worth supporting.

The future of the Supreme Court is at stake in this election. Donald Trump has promised to appoint judges in the mold of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, whose tenure on the high court was defined by denying LGBTQ Americans their equal rights.

HRC continues to urge Senate Republicans to  #DoYourJob. Click here to read more about the impact of this unprecedented obstructionism and what’s at stake next Tuesday.
