The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization, is proud to announce the recipients of the inaugural Humane Civil Servant Award. This annual award recognizes public employees and their departments whose actions rose above the day to day expectations of their jobs to rescue an animal in critical need.
“We are proud to recognize these public safety officials and their agencies who bravely went above and beyond the call of duty to save the lives of animals in distress,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS.
The 2010 award recipients are:
- Trooper Deanne Oswald-DeBottis of the Michigan State Police for rescuing and stabilizing an injured dog who was dodging traffic on Interstate 96 in Brighton Township.
- Officer Michael Lucas of the Denville Township (N.J.) Police Department for rescuing a dog who was trapped in the cab of a truck engulfed in flames.
- Deputies Kevin Davis, Kathy Zedalis, Clifton Reynolds, Cliff Gabbard and Russell Canty of the Alachua County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office for helping save a gravely injured dog who, along with her owner, had been struck by a car.
- Animal Control Officer Aimee Wesley of the Kenton County (Ky.) Police Department for rescuing 13 pets from her neighbors’ burning homes.
- The Los Angeles Fire Department for going to great lengths to rescue a dog who was stranded in the currents of the Los Angeles River.
- City of Lake Wales (Fla.) Fire Department deputy fire chief Joe Jenkins, Lt. Roy Wilkinson, Lt. Mike Polston and Firefighter Brittany Sweeney for going above and beyond the call of duty to rescue a kitten from the wall of an abandoned house.
- Officer John Szakalski of the Syracuse (N.Y.) Police Department for rescuing a dog who fell through the ice in the Inner Harbor.
- The Prince George’s County (Md.) Fire/EMS Department for rescuing a dog who had fallen 25 feet into a storm drain.
- Montgomery County (Md.) Fire and Rescue Service Firefighter Rashad Surratt for rescuing a dog who was stranded on a frozen pond in Potomac.
- The crew of Chicago Fire Department Fire Boat, Engine 58, the Victor L. Schlaeger, for assisting an animal care and control officer with the rescue of a coyote who was stranded on a sheet of ice in Lake Michigan.
- The City of Bend (Ore.) Police Department for helping the staff of the Awbrey Glen Golf Course and their landscape crews rescue a cow elk who had fallen into an icy pond.
- The City of Albany Fire Department and Averill Park-Sand Lake (N.Y.) Volunteer Fire Department for rescuing a gray fox stranded on a small sheet of ice in the Hudson River.
