The HSUS Issues Statement in Nevada County, Calif., Opossum Cruelty Case

The Humane Society of the United States is issuing the following statement in response to a horrific Nevada County, Calif., animal cruelty case in which Carter Livingston, a 19-year-old Lake of the Pines resident, is charged with felony animal cruelty in connection with allegations he recorded and posted to Facebook a video depicting his brutal and repeated stabbing of a possum in front of neighborhood children. The video was brought to the attention of Nevada County authorities after a San Diego Humane Society and SPCA officer watched the video and tracked down the perpetrators.

“We applaud humane officers and the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office for taking this case so seriously. Getting the attention of prosecutors in cases involving allegations of animal cruelty is an essential step in protecting community safety,” said Jennifer Fearing, California senior state director for The HSUS.
