The HSUS Urges USDA to Maintain Downer Ban

Plans to weaken a ban on slaughtering downed cattle for human consumption threaten to undermine public confidence in the U.S. beef supply and will increase the inhumane handling of cattle being sent to slaughter, The Humane Society of the United States said on April 18th.

"The Bush Administration acted responsibly after mad cow disease was detected in the United States by implementing a ban on slaughtered cattle too ill or injured to walk for human consumption," said Wayne Pacelle, HSUS president and CEO. "But the downer ban was hardly a new idea
