Hundreds of students in kindergarten through 12th grade entered The Humane Society of the United States’ Chimps Deserve Better Drawing Contest. Artists were asked to create drawings based upon this year’s theme, “A Tribute to Chimpanzee Sanctuaries.”
The HSUS is proud to announce that MUTTS ® cartoonist Patrick McDonnell chose Olivia Brett, a sixth-grader from Fort Collins, Colo., and Shannon Greenhaus, a 12th grader from The Woodlands, Texas as the Grand Prize winners.
Also, the HSUS selected winners from the following six grade level categories: K-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12.
They are:
- Esme McKinney, a first-grader from Bowling Green, Ky. Her entry was coordinated by her teacher, Ms. Jennifer Brooks.
- Natasha Wisniewski, a fourth-grader from Sedona, Ariz.
- Anne Lovelock, a sixth-grader from West Melbourne, Fla.
- Yoshio Ishikawa, an eighth-grader from Nutley, N.J. His entry was coordinated by his teacher, Ms. Hillary Hill.
- Catherine Albano, a 10th grader from Hamilton, N.J. Her entry was coordinated by her teacher, Ms. Kathy Gronostajski
- Julia O’Gara, a 12th grader from Scituate, R.I. Her entry was coordinated by her teacher, Ms. Wendy Feldman.
The Grand Prize winners each receive an iPod touch. The additional six winners will each receive $25. In addition, each of the winners was a contender for the People’s Choice prize. More than 1,000 votes were cast and the winner of the People’s Choice award is Catherine Albano. She will receive a $100 prize. The four teachers who coordinated prize-winning entries will each receive a $250 gift certificate for art supplies.

“It was extremely difficult to choose the grand prize winners,” said McDonnell. “I was very impressed with the talent and creativity displayed by the student artists in this contest. Congratulations to all of the finalists and winners on creating such beautiful drawings.”
Through its Chimps Deserve Better campaign, The HSUS is working to gain support from policymakers, the public and the scientific community; challenging arguments advocating harmful chimpanzee research; educating people about the plight of the approximately 1,000 chimpanzees in six labs throughout the U.S.; and working to prevent breeding of more chimpanzees for research.
