WWF Statement on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Move Toward Protecting Giraffes Under Endangered Species Act

Following initial review of the petition to list giraffes under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has concluded that listing may be warranted. In response to this news, World Wildlife Fund issued a statement from Ginette Hemley, senior vice president for wildlife conservation:

“This offers a rare spot of optimism for an iconic species in peril.

“Giraffe populations have nearly halved over the last 30 years alone. To reverse this trend, effective actions must be taken to protect the species and its habitats.

“The US Endangered Species Act has long played a critical role in protecting wildlife both at home and overseas. Listing giraffes under the ESA would enable the US to do its part to ensure the species can thrive for generations to come.”
