The Atlanta City Council Utilities Committee approved legislation directing the City’s Office of Sustainability to create a plan by January studying how City Buildings will be powered by 100 percent clean electricity by 2025 and how all of Atlanta will be 100 percent clean energy by 2035.
The measure, introduced by Councilman Kwanza Hall, will now move to the full City Council for consideration on Monday, May 1st. So far, 26 cities across the country have now committed to transition to 100 percent clean and renewable energy. Atlanta would be the first city in Georgia to make this commitment.
In response, Ted Terry, Director of the Sierra Club’s Georgia Chapter, issued the following statement:
“With today’s action at the City Council, Atlanta is one step closer to becoming the biggest city in the south to commit to transition to 100 percent clean and renewable energy.
Here in Georgia, we’ve seen the benefits of clean energy like solar. From more local jobs to lower electricity costs, clean energy is strengthening our communities and expanding opportunity for families and businesses. This is true across the country where more than 25 cities have now committed to transition entirely to renewable sources of energy like wind and solar.
We applaud Councilman Hall for bringing this vision for our city forward and look forward to working with community leaders across Atlanta to move us closer to realizing this goal.”
