First Hurdle Cleared As House Subcommittee Boosts Awa Funding

Thanks to all of the activist phone calls to members of Congress, the

House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee has granted a $4.3 million

increase in funding for Animal Welfare Act inspections and enforcement

this year. This funding increase, if it holds in the House and Senate,

will be essential to improve USDA’s oversight and inspection of the

multitudes of puppy mills, laboratories, zoos, circuses, airlines, and

other facilities across the country. The next important hurdle to pass

will be the approval by the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committee.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  1. Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) is the Chair of this Committee, and he needs

to hear from you! Contact Senator Kohl at (202) 224-5653 or

senator_kohl@kohl.senate.gov and ask him to: “approve the $2.9 million

increase in funding for APHIS, Animal Care (AC), $1 million increase for

APHIS Investigative and Enforcement Services (IES), and $400,000 increase

for ARS Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC).”

  2. Send your thanks to the Congressmen responsible for this funding

    increase:

Representative Bill Young (FL-10), Chairman of the Appropriations

    Committee: (202) 225-5961

Rep. Henry Bonilla (TX-23), Chairman of the Agriculture Appropriations

    Subcommittee: (202) 225-4511

Rep. Sam Farr (CA-17), member of the Agriculture Appropriations

    Subcommittee: (202) 225-2861.
