In December 2004, a four-month-old rescued Barbados lamb made her way (with a little help from kind friends) to Farm Sanctuary’s Northern California Shelter. Ever since, she has made herself right at home!
Persia was rejected by her mother when she was just a baby. She was a twin, and for whatever reason, her mother chose to only care for her sibling and not for her. The farmer who “owned” the family was not willing to invest the time or energy required to care for Persia himself; instead, he was either going to let her die or send her, at less than a week old, to auction. So shortly after her life had started, its outcome already looked bleak. But fortunately, her story was not even close to over!
A kind animal control officer who knew the farmer stepped in and offered to take Persia off his hands. She took the tiny lamb home and immediately fell head over heels for her! The officer and her daughter loved Persia so much that they knew they needed to help her live the happy life she deserved, so they reached out to Farm Sanctuary.
When Persia made her way to our Northern California Shelter, our staff members and volunteers were all immediately struck by this amazing lamb’s special personality. She was incredibly open and friendly, happily trotting up to everyone she met and bleating for attention. She quickly became the most popular girl at the sanctuary!
Persia today, still as beautiful and sweet as the day we met her!
Persia wasted no time settling into her new home. There were so many places to explore, new smells to investigate, and yummy things to munch on she could hardly contain herself!
Persia is quite a bit older now than when she first arrived, but she’s still plenty spry to be able to reach up into the trees for snacks!
Persia found her first “sheeple” friend in a young sheep named Bleu. She was a little unsure of this wiggly little lamb at first, but quickly warmed up to him, and was always leading the way on new adventures for them both to go on.
Persia, right, with her longtime pal Bleu.
Persia now lives with many other sheep in our main flock. She doesn’t just have one friend (although she and Bleu are both still very close) — she has an entire flock of them! She loves hanging out with her buddies Colvin, Katy, Marty, Trudy, Zuri, Marc, and Joey. If there is one thing we have learned about Persia, it’s that she has no trouble making friends (of either the sheep or “humanimal” variety)!

Persia has been enjoying the good life here at Farm Sanctuary for 12 years, and she still greets every day with happiness and excitement. After all, a sheep’s work is never done — there is too much exploring, nibbling, and playing to be done!
Persia is always on the lookout for a snack!
We are so thankful that Persia was rescued all those years ago, and that she is now happily living the Farm Sanctuary life with us.
Please share Persia’s story. Together, we can encourage awareness and understanding about the rich emotional lives of sheep like her. With your support, we can continue to promote animal-friendly living through rescue, education, and advocacy efforts. A compassionate world begins with you!
