Groups Seek To Halt New Jersey Bear Hunt On Federal Land

In the wake of public outcry over the first hunting season in 33 years
on New Jersey's small bear population, which is scheduled to begin on
December 8, a coalition of prominent conservationists, biologists, and
animal protection groups have demanded that the Delaware Water Gap
National Recreation Area prohibit bear hunting on protected park
lands. The groups claim that allowing the bear hunt at the park would
violate federal environmental laws, and they plan to file litigation
if the hunt goes forward–less than two months after a federal court
ruled that a similar hunting program at Cape Cod National Seashore is
unlawful. Read more at:

New Jersey's U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg and U.S. Congressman Frank
Pallone also sent a letter to the National Park Service, urging the
federal agency to cancel the bear hunt at the Delaware Water Gap
National Recreation Area. A copy of their letter is available at:

The National Park Service needs to hear from you that protected park
lands should be off limits to bear hunters! Take action today by
