HRC Lauds UK For Domestic Partnership Law

Human Rights Campaign President Cheryl Jacques made the
following statement on November 18th lauding the United Kingdom's House of Lords
for passing a law giving same-sex couples the right to legal recognition
and the same rights and responsibilities that married couples receive.

"Same-sex couples and their families will soon have security in the
United Kingdom. England, Wales and Northern Ireland now join 12 other
countries in legally recognizing same-sex couples. As the citizens of
these countries prove, equality has had no devastating effects. Giving
citizens more rights and responsibilities is sound policy. Leaders here
in the United States can learn from our friends across the Atlantic."

Nine countries – Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Norway,
Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland – grant rights and protections that are
more limited than marriage but more extensive than those provided in the
United States. Three countries – Belgium, the Netherlands and Canada –
extend same-sex couples the right to marry.
