Alliant Energy announced that it will invest in 500 megawatts of new wind power, which will expand the Whispering Willow Wind Farm in Franklin County, Iowa, and possibly include projects in other areas of the state. The wind project will produce enough clean energy to power thousands of homes, and it moves the state further past its milestone of being the first in the nation to generate over 30% of its electricity from wind.
This is Alliant’s second clean energy announcement in two months, as the proposed wind project follows on the heels of the utility’s well-received announcement of its first utility-owned solar project, a 4 MW solar array to be built in Dubuque.
In response to today’s (7/27) news, Bruce Nilles, Senior National Director with the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club is thrilled to see Alliant Energy investing in Iowa’s clean energy economy, adding to the momentum of the state’s trail-blazing shift from dirty coal to clean energy. Iowa is a leader in wind development, and Alliant’s project will deliver the clean energy that customers have been demanding.”
