Cockfighting Ring Busted

The Philadelphia Inquirer has reported on two of the largest cockfighting
raids in recent memory. According to reports, police arriving at an
abandoned Philadelphia warehouse in March found a four-ring, championship
cockfighting tournament in progress, with more than 75 spectators in
attendance. Among the 60 or so live fighting roosters found were the
mangled, dead bodies of a dozen others. So large was the tournament that
one law enforcement official dubbed it"the Superbowl"of cockfighting,
with some of the attendees coming from as far away as New Jersey and New
York.

Following this huge bust, police responded to yet another report of
cockfighting in North Philadelphia in May. This time police arrested 24
people and confiscated more than fifty birds. In all, more than 100 live
birds and extensive cockfighting paraphernalia were seized from the two
raids, and some 108 people are facing felony charges as participants or
spectators at the fights.

The successful prosecution of this case is essential to cracking down on
the extensive cockfighting network that pervades the East Coast.
Pennsylvania has a tough anti-cockfighting law; now it is up to us to make
sure it is properly enforced!

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Thank the Philadelphia County District Attorney for her efforts so far in
prosecuting this case, and encourage her to aggressively pursue all
potential felony convictions.
