News media outlets across the country, including the New York Times, CNN,
the Baltimore Sun, and the Associated Press ran stories this week on one
animal advocacy group's investigation of alleged animal cruelty in the egg
industry. Compassion Over Killing (COK), a Washington, D.C., animal
advocacy group, revealed video footage of cruel conditions that it claims
are rampant in the egg industry, including hens crammed into cages the
size of filing cabinets–often with the bodies of dead and dying hens—and
others still alive who had fallen out of their cages, only to die in the
vast manure pits below. According to one COK representative, "If the abuse
egg-laying hens endure was forced upon dogs or cats, it would be illegal."
