Responding to the publication of the European Commission’s 2050 climate roadmap (A roadmap for moving to a competitive low carbon economy in 2050), Greenpeace EU climate policy director Joris den Blanken said: “The Commission’s paper shows that the case for a 30% EU carbon target has never been stronger. Lobby efforts by old carbon-intensive industries could not derail plans to adjust carbon trading to a higher carbon target.”
Den Blanken added: “Europe needs a green way out of recession that isn’t held back by oil price volatility, but is instead spurred forward by innovation and job creation. A step up to a 30 percent carbon target by European governments will give people and businesses lower fuel bills, efficient cars and more comfortable houses.”
The Environment ministers of the UK, Germany, Spain, Denmark and Portugal already support a higher target, along with a growing movement of progressive companies.
Greenpeace calls on the EU to commit to a 30% domestic cut in carbon emissions (within its borders).
