On August 3rd, Texas Petroleum Investment Company spilled an estimated 4,200 gallons of crude oil into the mouth of the Mississippi River. This marks the third spill in the Gulf of Mexico in less than two weeks. Last week, Texas Petroleum spilled 840 gallons oil oil, and Hilcorp Energy spilled 4,200 gallons of crude oil.
In response, Sierra Club Senior Organizing Representative Darryl Malek-Wiley released the following statement:
“It’s difficult to not be disheartened by the repeated destruction of the Gulf by oil and gas companies. Their treatment–and America’s willingness to permit it–of the region as a sacrifice zone is unacceptable.
“Enough is enough. Communities throughout the Gulf deserve the same right as all of us to breathe clean air and drink clean water, and we must take action to ensure these rights are respected.”
