The Human Rights Campaign condemned the Wisconsin Senate
passage of a constitutional amendment that would deny marriage, civil
unions or domestic partnerships to same-sex couples in the state.
"No constitution should ever be used to discriminate," said HRC
President Cheryl Jacques. "We will continue to work closely with the
families of Wisconsin to ensure that this kind of biased amendment never
defaces their Constitution."
"We have faith in the fairness and compassion of the people of this
state," said Chris Ott, executive director of Action Wisconsin, the
statewide gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights group.
"Wisconsinites will soundly reject this amendment should it pass the
Legislature again next January, especially once they understand that it
is designed to ban civil unions, comprehensive domestic partnership
benefits and marriage."
HRC partnered with Action Wisconsin to generate grassroots opposition to
the amendment – through action alerts, a town hall meeting and Equality
Fund grants of $19,000 for polling and online advocacy, among other
work. The measure – which was already passed in the House – must be
passed again in the next session of the Legislature by a simple majority
of both Houses. The question would then be placed on the ballot, which
could not happen before April 2005.
