Martha Speaks for Shelters

The millions of kids who watch PBS’s “Martha Speaks” have an entertaining way to learn about the wonderful and critical work done by animal shelters as well as the importance of pet adoption.

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

In support of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, November 6-11, “Martha Speaks” has teamed up with The HSUS to launch a new “Helping Animals” section on the show’s website.

There, kids and their families will find information about what they can do to help their local animal shelters along with resources on pet care and adoption.

“Martha Speaks” has also developed a special week of shows—with themes ranging from shelters to dog care—that will air during the first week of October, encouraging PBS stations nationwide to celebrate shelters in their communities.

A stray inspiration

The real-life Martha, who inspired the popular children’s book series, was a stray, so for Martha Speaks author Susan Meddaugh, helping shelter animals is a cause that is near and dear to her heart. “Martha has taken me on an incredible ride. She has given me far more than I could ever have imagined, including the adoption of five more dogs over the years,” says Meddaugh. “If we hadn’t adopted Martha, we would have missed so much. It makes me sad to think of all the dogs in shelters, and all the love and surprises they could bring to a forever home of their own.”

You’re never too young to help your shelter

Inga Fricke, Director of Sheltering and Pet Care Issues for The HSUS, observes that the Martha Speaks partnership shows that it’s never too early to learn about animal shelters and pet adoption. She added that everyone can do something to help their local shelters or rescues during National Animal Shelter Appreciation week and year-round.

Help your local shelter

  • Donate funds or supplies Shelters and rescue groups are always in need of towels, toys, and other supplies for the animals. Look for a “wish list” on their websites or give them a call to find out what they can use.
  • Volunteer  Helping animals at the shelter can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
  • Say thank you Your shelter will appreciate a quick email, call, or visit just to thank the people who work tirelessly to care for homeless animals in your community.
