The first batch of 35 orphaned baby skunks now being cared for at the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center was released back into the Southern California mountains on June 3.
The nine skunks were about two months old, and had shown they were capable of hunting food for themselves, said Christine Barton, senior wildlife caretaker at the Wildlife Center in Ramona, Calif.
“The area where we released them, by a stream, is just beautiful,” Barton said.
For the record, nobody got sprayed during the trip or during the release. The skunks scurried away from their temporary human caretakers as fast as they could.
