On November 28th, North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple issued an emergency evacuation order, demanding that the Standing Rock Sioux and Water Protectors evacuate the Tribe’s land, “effective immediately.”
In response, Sierra Club Director of Beyond Dirty Fuels Lena Moffitt released the following statement:
Governor Dalrymple continues to recklessly enable corporate polluters at the expense of the Standing Rock Sioux’s history, heritage, and ancestral homelands. The Governor cites his concern for public safety, and yet he has stood by while militarized local law enforcement have used excessive force, including concussion grenades, rubber bullets, and water cannons in freezing weather against peaceful Water Protectors. The only one who should be ordered to vacate this land is Energy Transfer, and the Obama administration must intervene and reject the Dakota Access pipeline.
“The Sierra Club continues to support and stand in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux and thousands of Water Protectors, and we will continue this fight until the pipeline has been rejected.”
