On Monday, the Department of the Army sent a letter on the future of the Dakota Access pipeline. The letter claims that the review process of the pipeline was conducted and completed in accordance with the necessary requirements. However, the letter goes on to note that additional discussion and analysis of the pipeline is warranted prior to granting the final easements required to construct under Lake Oahe.
The Department of Army has been directed to conduct robust conversations with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. As these conversations are planned, construction on or bordering Corps land cannot occur as the final permits have not been granted.
Nearly 200 actions, occurring in every state, were planned for Tuesday, November 15 calling on the Obama administration to reject the pipeline.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“We are encouraged by the Obama administration’s decision to withhold granting the final easement approving the Dakota Access pipeline, but the fact remains, there is no safe route for any pipeline — especially when crossing a body of water.
“From desecrating sacred Tribal land to the employment of private security wielding attack dogs, Energy Transfer has repeatedly proven its disregard for the people, history, and heritage of the Standing Rock Sioux, and its dirty and dangerous pipeline must be rejected before the company can inflict any more harm.”
