Thanks to persuasive comments from the public and others to the National
Organic Standards Board (NOSB) opposing the factory farming industry's
attempts to usurp the "organic" label, a National Organic Plan has been
established which will prevent factory farming interests from co-opting
the "organic" label.
In a 12-1 vote, the NOSB Livestock committee
clarified that organically-raised chickens must have outdoor access and
that temporary confinement can occur only during inclement weather,
certain environmental conditions, or during certain stages of development
while the chickens are feathering.
Prior to the decision, factory farming
interests had claimed that allowing birds outside was unnecessary. If
their claim had been accepted, they could have labeled birds kept in
intensive conditions as organic.
