Each year, POZ, an award-winning resource for people living with and affected by HIV & AIDS, releases “The POZ 100,” celebrating activist and advocates working to end the HIV & AIDS epidemic. This year, POZ is recognizing Southern HIV and AIDS advocates, including HRC’s Senior Manager, Historically Black Colleges and Universities HBCU Program, Leslie Hall.
“In August, he (Hall) convened health and wellness professionals from HBCUs across the country to discuss best practices for engaging LGBT students around HIV prevention strategies including Truvada as PrEP,” POZ reported. “He also manages the annual HBCU Leadership Summit, where he is partnering with Gilead to incorporate a health and wellness component centered on HIV prevention and advances in treatment. Leslie understands that you can’t talk to HBCUs and not talk about HIV.”
HRC’s HBCU Project works with a dynamic group of LGBTQ HBCU student-leaders committed to advocating for LGBTQ-inclusion and social justice on campuses and in their communities. HRC has established relationships with 30 HBCUs by providing support to LGBTQ and allied students, faculty and staff who wish to improve LGBTQ inclusion on their campuses.
This past weekend, HRC hosted its 11th annual HBCU Leadership Summit. The Summit is an opportunity for leadership development and is an advocacy-training program for student leaders and administrators on issues of LGBTQ inclusion and safety.
In addition to the our work the HBCU Project, Project One America, HRC’s comprehensive campaign in Alabama, Arkansas and Mississippi, is working to reduce the stigma of HIV & AIDS and advancing awareness of treatment and prevention. Additionally, HRC continues to push Congress to provide the strongest possible federal response to the epidemic and educate the LGBTQ community and our allies on the realities of HIV prevention, treatment and care.
Hall is an alumnus of two historically Black colleges and universities. He earned a Master of Social Work from Howard University and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Bowie State University. HRC congratulates Hall on this honor and thanks him for his hard work and dedication.
