Clean, renewable energy has surpassed coal to become the largest source of new installed electricity in the world, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). Led by wind and solar power, renewable energy accounted for more than half of the new power capacity installed across the globe in 2015.
The IEA also notes that nearly half a million solar panels were installed every day around the world last year. In China, two wind turbines were installed every hour in 2015.According to the IEA, “over the next five years, renewables will remain the fastest-growing source of electricity generation.”
In Response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune Released the Following Statement:
“This is a historic milestone that shows communities around the world are recognizing that clean, renewable energy like wind and solar is safer, healthier, and increasingly cheaper than fossil fuels. The international community has reached a turning point as we hit the accelerator on the transition to a clean energy economy. This news doesn’t just mean the world installed more renewable energy than dirty coal — it means cleaner air, new jobs, and a more stable climate.
“We can already see this transition here at home where nearly 250 coal-fired power plants are on the path to retirement and 19 cities from San Diego to Salt Lake City have committed to powering their communities with 100% clean, renewable energy — energy that is growing more affordable and more accessible by the day. Things are changing in our nation and around the world, but we have to maintain our focus to keep up the momentum to ensure every community has access to the benefits of the clean energy economy and that no one is left behind.”
