For the past twenty years, The Humane Society of the United States has presented the Russell and Burch Award to scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the field of animal alternatives in scientific research.
We are now accepting nominations for the 2011 award, which will honor a scientist who has advanced alternative methods in the areas of biomedical research, testing, or higher education.
The Russell and Burch award recognizes the important role individual scientists play in limiting the use and suffering of animals in laboratories. The award is named in honor of William M. Russell and Rex L. Burch, the scientists who devised the Three Rs. This approach encourages replacing animal experiments with other methods, reducing the number of animals used in experiments, and refining experiments to alleviate or minimize potential animal pain.
Examples of replacement alternatives include using artificial human skin in skin irritation tests and using blood from human volunteers to test for the presence of fever-causing contaminants in intravenous medicines. Each of these tests saves hundreds of thousands of rabbits from painful procedures every year.
The HSUS will present the award, which carries a $5,000 prize, at The Eighth World Congress on Alternatives & Animal Use in the Life Sciences, to be held August 21-25, 2011, in Montréal, Canada.
