Sierra Club-endorsed candidate Kamala Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the next senator for California. Sierra Club members and supporters helped get out the vote for Harris as part of its Victory Corps program, a nationwide coordinated effort that embeds staff on state and federal campaigns around the country.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club is proud to congratulate climate champion Kamala Harris on her victory. We were happy to not only endorse Harris, but to invest Sierra Club resources and deploy staff to work on her behalf, recruiting volunteers to knock doors, making phone calls, and getting out the vote.
“Harris is part of the effort to reclaim Congress for climate champions, and we couldn’t be more excited to have her in office standing up for our communities. We look forward to working with Harris to tackle the climate crisis, create clean energy jobs, and protect our clean air and water.”
Sierra Club California Chapter Director Kathryn Phillips released the following statement:
“California families deserve a leader who is serious about tackling the climate crisis, creating clean energy jobs, and protecting the health of our communities — and today, we got one in Kamala Harris. We were thrilled to hit the phones and the streets to get out the vote in support of Harris because we know she is a climate champion that Californians can depend on to put our state first — not the polluters.”
