Sierra Club-endorsed candidate Tammy Duckworth defeated Mark Kirk to become the next Senator for Illinois. Sierra Club members and supporters helped get out the vote for Duckworth as part of its Victory Corps program, a nationwide coordinated effort that embeds staff on state and federal campaigns around the country.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club is proud to congratulate climate champion Tammy Duckworth on her victory. We were happy to not only endorse Duckworth, but to invest Sierra Club resources and deploy staff to work on her behalf, recruiting volunteers to knock doors, making phone calls, and getting out the vote.
“Duckworth is part of the effort to reclaim Congress for climate champions, and we couldn’t be more excited to have her in office standing up for our communities. We look forward to continue working with Duckworth to tackle the climate crisis, create clean energy jobs, and protect our clean air and water.”
Sierra Club Illinois Chapter Director Jack Darin released the following statement:
“Illinois families deserve a leader who is serious about tackling the climate crisis, creating clean energy jobs, and protecting the health of our communities — and today, we got one in Tammy Duckworth. Sierra Club volunteers were thrilled to hit the phones and the streets to get out the vote in support of Tammy, because we have worked with her for years to advance these goals. We know she will be a champion for the Prairie State and for our planet, and that Illinois families can depend on her to put our state first — not the polluters.”
