On August 1st, The Movement For Black Lives, a coalition of more than 50 groups responding to the sustained violence against Black communities, released a historic platform calling for sweeping and swift policy reforms to end the systemic oppression of Black people.
Included in the platform are a call to completely divest from exploitative forces like the fossil fuel industry and an end to the unchecked flow of corporate money into the political system.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“This platform deserves the attention of anyone interested in ensuring that every person can live on a healthy planet with clean air and water, a stable climate and safe communities. For generations, Black communities have been assaulted by – among other things – systemic violence, a massively disproportionate share of toxic pollution, and an unfair political system more responsive to the voices of corporations and fossil fuel executives than to the voices of Black people. The Sierra Club stands in solidarity with all those fighting against oppression because Black Lives Matter, and we urge our allies, friends and all those interested in justice, accountability, and democracy to do the same.”
