Today, in their first joint rally, Vermont Senator and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders endorsed presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Secretary Hillary Clinton.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club praises Senator Sanders’ endorsement of Secretary Clinton and his continued commitment to combat climate change and complete America’s transition to 100% clean, renewable energy.
“Democratic voters have been fortunate to witness a vigorous and hard-fought campaign between two candidates with a clear and progressive vision for our country–which is exactly how it should be.
“Unfortunately, this was contrasted by the Republican Primary which focused on outrageous claims and name-calling, ultimately nominating a candidate who would be the only world leader to deny climate science.
“Secretary Clinton and Senator Sanders made this a campaign about ideas. Ideas on how to stop climate disruption while speeding our transition to clean, renewable energy and leaving fossil fuels in the ground. Ideas on the importance of rejecting dangerous trade deals like the Trans Pacific Partnership. And ideas on how best to help those whose homes and lives have been wrecked by pollution.
“We thank Senator Sanders and his dedicated staff for their tireless advocacy and progress achieved, and we look forward to continuing to partner with them to elect Secretary Clinton president and to make these ideas policies.”
