Congressional leadership and the White House have signaled that there is no path forward for the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal this year. This is the result of a more than six-year campaign by a strong coalition of environmental organizations, labor unions, economists, musicians and entertainers, and millions of Americans fighting for a more just, equitable, and safe world.
In response, Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune released the following statement:
“The TPP was doomed from the moment that trade negotiators decided to forge a deal behind closed doors with the goal of boosting corporate profits rather than prioritizing the needs of workers, communities, and a livable planet.
“Donald Trump didn’t stop the TPP. The conventional wisdom that the TPP would pass easily failed years ago as millions of Americans and thousands of organizations rejected the status-quo approach to trade and fought against its threats to our families, our nation, and our climate. Our fight against the TPP is rooted in respect for workers rights around the world, a commitment to climate justice, and a dedication to a new model of trade based on our shared values. Sadly, Trump’s opposition to the TPP rejects those values because it is rooted in the same xenophobia that dominated his campaign and is backed by no real vision for what comes next.
“That is why it is more important than ever that we state clearly what must come next. It is high time that we create a new approach to trade that supports rather than undermines action on climate change, workers rights, and the health of our communities. The Sierra Club will continue to use our grassroots strength to advance a new vision for trade policy that will protect both people and the planet.”
