The Petition for Poultry has been gaining support and signatures since its launch just before Thanksgiving. More than 81,800 people have signed the petition, which seeks to amend the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA) to include chickens, ducks, turkeys and other birds who are killed by the billions each year for food. Although these animals make up more than 95% of the animals killed for food, there is no federal requirement that their deaths be humane.
Coverage for poultry under the HMSA is a long overdue step to help stop the rampant abuse in the poultry processing industry, which has grossly demonstrated that it is not capable of responsible, humane treatment of animals. In July of 2004, undercover video footage taken at the Pilgrim's Pride slaughterhouse in West Virginia showed chickens being thrown against walls and stomped by workers. Even with this shocking evidence, West Virginia prosecutors are refusing to bring animal cruelty charges because they feel that since the chickens were in a slaughterhouse, the case is a "regulatory" matter. But because chickens are not covered by the HMSA, there is no "regulatory" recourse to bring this case to justice. That's why it is so important to sign the Petition for Poultry. If you have already signed, thank you! You can still help by forwarding the petition to all of your family and friends.
