The Humane Society of the United States applauds the Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners for unanimously voting against a rule that would have resulted in the closure of the state’s nonprofit spay/neuter clinics.
“Alabamians made it loud and clear they want nonprofit spay and neuter clinics to continue operation,” said Mindy Gilbert, Alabama state director for The HSUS. “In addition to concerned animal advocates, several municipalities passed resolutions opposing the rules, clearly indicating the need for low-cost spay neuter programs to effectively impact the problem of pet overpopulation and to ensure community health and safety.”
Earlier this week, The HSUS and its veterinary affiliate, The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association sent comments to the board that stated the proposed rules would have a devastating impact on efforts to provide basic veterinary care for Alabama’s homeless and under-served animals, contradict state and federal law, and were submitted in violation of Alabama’s Administrative Procedure Act.
