This week(7/25), the state of California finally gained possession of dozens
of exotic tigers, leopards, and lions who were in deplorable
conditions at a commercial "pseudo-sanctuary" which bred animals and
charged money for people to have their photographs taken with them.
Officials had also found dozens of tiger carcasses–including 58 baby
tigers in a freezer–at the home of the owner.
The Fund has been
feeding and caring for the surviving animals for months, and can now
begin the process of sterilizing and placing them at reputable,
accredited zoos or animal sanctuaries. It will be a difficult task, as
there are thousands of exotic cats in private hands in the U.S. and,
because of this national crisis, many suitable sanctuaries and zoos
are already filled to capacity. But we will keep you posted as the
situation develops.
