The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International are pleased to announce that this year’s World Spay Day takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, during Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. World Spay Day is an annual campaign that promotes spay/neuter as a proven, effective means of saving animals’ lives.
Hundreds of World Spay Day events will take place in the United States and dozens of countries around the world, on World Spay Day and throughout the month of February. It is truly marvelous what all of us working together can do.”
World Spay Day creates a worldwide wave of spay/neuter awareness and activity by linking together hundreds of events organized by local animal welfare organizations and advocates, as well as by veterinary professionals through The HSUS’ veterinary affiliate Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association. World Spay Day provides a unique opportunity for everyone who cares about animals to come together towards a common goal – a global, united solution to end the euthanasia and suffering of homeless companion animals, feral cats and street dogs.
“The overpopulation of cats, dogs and other pets is a global problem and it’s gratifying to see that caring people the world over are working to raise awareness that spay/neuter is the solution,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. “To reflect Spay Day’s new status in the world, it is only fitting that we change the name of Spay Day USA to World Spay Day.”
Founded as Spay Day USA in 1995 by the Doris Day Animal League and Doris Day Animal Foundation, the program has grown to include participants in 46 countries in 2011. Events include low and no-cost spay/neuter clinics for low-income families, fundraisers to benefit spay/neuter programs and educational efforts for pet owners about the importance of spaying or neutering pets. Since Spay Day’s inception, it is estimated that more than one million animals have been spayed or neutered in conjunction with the campaign.
