In response to a new study released today by WWF and eleven international and Indonesian NGOs, finding new risks associated with Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) mega-scale pulp mill project, World Wildlife Fund issued the following statement from Linda Walker, Director of Responsible Forestry and Trade:
“The study highlights a concern that APP could default on its ‘zero deforestation’ commitment and resume destroying rainforests. This would be yet another example of a broken promise in a long line of APP broken promises.
“For APP to build a new mega-mill in one of the 11 most threatened forest regions on the planet—where the sustainable supply of plantation fiber was already in question and where APP has been responsible for so much forest destruction—is disheartening to say the least. That’s not the kind of leadership we want to see from Indonesia and China’s largest pulp and paper producer.
“The move by APP would spell disaster for Sumatra’s wildlife. Sumatra is the only place where tigers, orangutans, elephants and rhinos co-exist. The region has already had to deal with tremendous haze-related problems last year associated with devastating fires, including many on APP supplier concessions.
“As questions about APP’s ability to meet its deforestation-free commitments continue, WWF encourages businesses and consumers to use their purchasing power to protect forests in Indonesia and beyond by looking for the Forest Stewardship Council label when buying paper and other forest products.”
