Animal Welfare Groups Respond to Signing of Senate Bill 113

Animal welfare organizations issued the following statements in reaction to Gov. Jay Nixon’s signing of SB 113 to repeal Proposition B, the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act:

“The attack on Prop B has been a shameful example of politics at its worst, with a narrow majority of lawmakers and now the governor subverting a vote of the people that occurred just a few months ago. Politicians refused for decades to deal with the puppy mill problem, and now after voters decided they had enough with the state’s inaction and passed a ballot initiative, the politicians in the state have decided they know better than the people.” – Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO, The Humane Society of the United States

“We are extremely disappointed that Governor Nixon has decided to support the rejection of Missouri voters’ decision to improve conditions for the animals in puppy mills. Senate Bill 113 promotes the status quo by allowing puppy millers to produce puppies without limits and to confine them and their breeding parents in small, stacked cages with no room to turn around. This clearly is a shocking step backward and a most unfortunate show of disrespect for the democratic process, where the voters, not commercially influenced legislators, should be making the decisions.” – Gregory Castle, chief executive officer of Best Friends Animal Society

“Governor Nixon’s signature of SB 113 today is a major setback in the fight against animal cruelty. Elected officials must be held accountable to their constituents and this repeal on Proposition B is in no way a reflection of the will of the people.”- Ed Sayres, president and CEO of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)
