In honor of National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 13-19, and the
upcoming centennial of the National Wildlife Refuge System in 2003,
The Fund for Animals says that the animals will have nothing to
celebrate on the refuges where trapping and sport hunting is allowed.
More than 60% of all the refuges allow the recreational shooting and
cruel and indiscriminate trapping of wildlife. Although the term
"refuge" usually invokes a vision of a safe haven, that is often not
the case–Centennial Commission member Ramona Bass has stated that
"some people will be startled to learn that hunting is allowed on the
refuges."
